Description

Hey there! I compiled a really really rough step by step tutorial. I am afraid I will not have any pictures or video released until after Halloween, but if this is helpful, feel free to use it, if not, no worries! I apologize for the long description. I wanted to get this out there as soon as possible to anyone who is willing to try it.

When making a pattern large enough, I take newsprint, or tissue paper, and put it over my screen while I am zooming in a lot, then trace very very lightly with a pencil (of course, use the same percentage across the entire tracing).

MAKING A BULB BAG:

Estimated time: 4-7 hours*

*with a sewing machine (a strong machine, not a mini, is recommended, as you will eventually pass through 5 layers of fabric.)

Estimated cost: <$30

YOU WILL NEED:

*1/2 yard of green minky or fleece fabric ~$4-$8

*about 1/2 yard low cost fabric of any color for lining (could be any cotton, t shirt fabric, sheet, or flannel you can find lying around) <$4

*2 yards of poly webbing, or any thick strap material <$4

*2 triglides if you want adjustable straps. You can find them on an old backpack you don't need anymore, if the store doesn't have them)

*14-22 inch heavy duty/brass zipper <$5

*Polyester stuffing ~$4 (you can also use stuffing from an old pillow)

*1/2 yard felt or any inexpensive thick fabric <$2 (it will not be seen in the finished project)

LET'S GO!!! :D

****************************************************************

SEWING TOGETHER THE BULB

1. Sew the 5 INNER LEAFY EDGE pieces onto the jagged tips of the BULB SEGMENTS (reverse side facing out). Trim the extra fabric around the tips so both parts are now jagged.

2. Turn the tips back to being inside out again. Sew each of the 5 BULB SEGMENTS side by side (reverse side facing out!) until you have the half-spherish shape of the bulb.

3. Take the TOP OF THE BULB piece that will be on the outside and sew it along the bottom edges of the INNER LEAFY EDGE piece (reverse side facing out)

4. Turn the bulb right side out to check for any missed stitches. Turn inside out again, and trim any fabric edges near the stitching.

INSTALLING THE LINING (my really ghetto way :D)

1. Sew both long edges of the LINING together and sew the little circle on the smaller opening of the now cone-like shape of the lining. Check for any missed stitches, then trim fabric.

2. Turn the bulb part right side out and leave the lining inside out. Set the lining inside of the bulb so that the two circles line up as best you can. Pin it into place and put a little stuffing in the circular part between the lining and outside, as desired.

3. Turn the bulb over so the outside is facing up. You will sew in a circle on the green side so that it attaches the lining and seals the stuffing inside.

4. With the outside still facing up sew along the lines separating the bulb segments. This will divide each segment and also attach the lining.

FINISHING UP!

1. Stuff the segments as desired, then seal up the edges by running the machine around the edge of the bulb. (make it look nicer by folding any unfinished edges in on eachother before sewing)

2. Take the stuffed bulb and set it on top of the felt/thick

fabric. Trace lightly with chalk so you have a circle/oval shape. make sure the edges are neat, then cut another out of your lining.

3. Trace from a felt circle onto the fabric you would like to be the base of the bulb (that makes contact with your back) Leave
enough space around it so you can have a nice finished edge later.

4. Pin the outside, and felt piece together. Sew vertical stripes so the felt is not likely to slide on the inside of the bag.

5. Measure out the straps to fit your body, or use the triglides if you have them. If the straps are polyester based, burn the edges so they do not fray.

6. Sew it onto the base piece, then pin and sew on the lining.

7. Pin the zipper to the base, and sew it into place

8. Pin the zipper to the bulb piece and sew it into place.

9. Make sure the bulb is inside out, and have the lining of the base facing out. Pin both pieces together and sew around at least twice. Trim excess fabric.

10. Turn right side out, do some minor hand sewing around each end of the zipper, and Ta-da, you are done! *phew*
